Generative AI boom sparks investment spree M&A Explorer

Of the companies that incorporated using Stripe, 92% are outside of Silicon Valley; 28% of founders identify as a minority; 43% are first-time entrepreneurs. Minimal to no-fee banking services – Fintech companies typically have much lower acquisition and operating costs than traditional financial institutions. They are then able to pass on these savings in the form of no-fee Yakov Livshits or no-minimum-balance products to their customers. For example, fintech is enabling increased access to capital for business owners from diverse and varying backgrounds by leveraging alternative data to evaluate creditworthiness and risk models. This can positively impact all types of business owners, but especially those underserved by traditional financial service models.

High prices for AI startups

The second phase of downstream applications are less capital-intensive and closer to the market (meaning that they have a faster route to monetisation). At Forward, we approach the market optimistically, but pragmatically. We’re mindful of hype and look for teams focused on deep customer problems, building solutions based upon an intimate sectorial understanding that will enable them to build competitive moats less dependent on foundational model technology alone. Microsoft’s strategic investment in OpenAI—widely viewed as a market leader in the GenAI space—highlights the value sought in large language models. This technology builds on earlier forms of machine learning through its capability for “zero-shot” learning, which is the ability to carry out new tasks without previous training.

As the models mature, there will be more opportunities to replace higher reasoning and creativity-demanding tasks. The biggest problem with GAN is that it can only generate images with limited variety. To solve the problem, some models utilize the transformer architecture but extend their applications to image data, such as Dall-E (2021) and Dall-E 2 (2022). Some other models, known as latent diffusion models (LDM), leverage another class of models called diffusion models and combine them with GAN and transformers. This is the underlying architecture that powers models like Stable Diffusion. Before 2014, CNN, the best image model at the time, could only do classification tasks, i.e. it could tell you whether a picture is a dog but couldn’t create a dog image on its own.

Open AI’s newest form of its software, GPT-4, offers users a unique conversational experience, answering follow-up questions and even turning down requests deemed inappropriate. At Forward, we’ve seen the startup community rapidly address the technology, with a slew of new, exciting ‘application layer’ businesses emerging both from new startups in our deal flow and within our portfolio companies. Applications range across text, video, image and code (see Sequoia Capital’s generative AI Landscape for a breakdown). Many of the most exciting focus on solving problems for businesses, creating new possibilities, better user experiences and driving operational costs down. These businesses can monetise solutions faster than their foundational counterparts, and we’ve already seen commercially successful products based on generative transformer and score-based diffusion models (like Robin AI) yield results. Generative AI is a specific field within artificial intelligence that focuses on machines’ capability to create new content, ranging from text and code to voice, images, videos, processes, and even complex 3D structures.

Each branch of this recursive definition hinges on either “human beings” or “a person.” So by definition we think of AI as imitative of humans. There’s an investment craze over generative artificial intelligence, the subset of AI that exploded in popularity with ChatGPT, the chatbot from startup OpenAI. Such technology can create virtually any text, image or other content on command after having trained on the inputs of past data. Generative AI, or GenAI, the term for artificial intelligence systems able to generate text, images, video, audio and other media in response to prompts, is making waves within the global technology sector and beyond.

This first wave of Generative AI applications resembles the mobile application landscape when the iPhone first came out—somewhat gimmicky and thin, with unclear competitive differentiation and business models. However, some of these applications provide an interesting glimpse into what the future may hold. Once you see a machine produce complex functioning code or brilliant images, it’s hard to imagine a future Yakov Livshits where machines don’t play a fundamental role in how we work and create. For many years, brands have been able to personalize text, images, and audio in their marketing campaigns. Now with the onset of AI resources like Gan.ai, brands will for the first time, in just minutes be able to produce mass personalized videos for their marketing campaigns promising a more engaging experience for their users.

However the capital intensity of building with LLMs is formidable, and we had assumed that the density of talent required to build this could, at that time, only be found in the Valley. It wasn’t clear that foundational model research would happen in India. I’ll admit to being more than a little hesitant, but something in Suvrat’s assured, calm demeanour made us feel like if anyone could pull it off it would be him.
